RN To BSN Online Programs

You may choose to receive your BSN license for a number of reasons. Due to the current nursing shortage and the significant demand for qualified nurses, many who currently have their RN license have chosen to enroll in an online RN to BSN program. Why? Simply because they understand that this higher education will help to prepare them to fill roles that require keen leadership ability as well as communication and decision-making skills. Those who obtain their BSN are well prepared to re-enter the workforce as nursing management professionals.

RN to BSN online programs can provide you with the curriculum that you need in order to obtain your bachelor's of science in nursing, while still giving you the time that you need for work or for family responsibilities. There are hundreds of colleges and universities that now offer online learning in order to meet the growing demand of those who are employed while gaining their education.

Most RN to BSN online programs offer needed training in areas such as leadership, critical thinking and communication. Bachelor's degree programs also provide more clinical experience in non-hospital settings than lower degree programs. Some courses that are typically included in most RN to BSN programs include biology, physical sciences, social sciences and nursing assessment instruction. While most of the required courses for the actual nursing aspect of the job are included in the preparation for an RN license, there are administrative, professional and many psychological courses that will help to prepare the BSN for management and critical care employment.

In most of these programs, electives play a major part of the overall course requirement. Courses such as Omega Strategies, which prepares nurses to focus on the end of life care of their patients, and Music in Nursing, which introduces the theory and practice of music as a nursing intervention, help student nurses to understand a broader scope of the profession of nursing.

Many courses throughout these programs are also related to research. These classes help to teach the more experienced nurses the role of the nurse in the utilization of research. Students may explore medical research as it directly relates to health care and clinical nursing. Community Health Nursing is also included in many RN to BSN programs. These classes may include the theories and/or the practice of community health nursing. Finally, leadership and management courses are included in all RN to BSN programs. These classes prepare nurses with the skills needed to apply nursing practices in the constantly changing healthcare field.

Of course, course curriculum will likely vary depending on the institution in which you decide to enroll. If you have your RN license, but would like to further your career for professional reasons, or simply because the demand for licensed BSNs is higher, then taking an online RN to BSN program is an excellent start. The higher salary that comes with the higher education is very well worth the extra time that it takes to receive these credentials.
